Former Atlético Madrid forward Thomas Lemar netted a crucial equaliser as Girona, currently in 12th place, held Real Madrid to a 1-1 stalemate for the second time this season, further undermining the home side’s waning hopes of clinching the LaLiga title.
Sporting a kit reminiscent of the 1991/92 season, Girona made an energetic start to the opening match of LaLiga’s retro weekend. Azzedine Ounahi tested Real Madrid’s Andriy Lunin with a brilliant save at the near post within the first 15 minutes.
Meanwhile, Real Madrid, opting not to indulge in the nostalgic celebrations, sought to assert their dominance in the match with a couple of promising chances before the 30-minute mark.
Jude Bellingham, making his first start since January, missed a good opportunity when he poked the ball wide at full stretch, shortly before Federico Valverde had a fierce effort denied by the alert Paulo Gazzaniga.

However, Gazzaniga, the Girona goalkeeper, was left red-faced when Valverde unleashed a long-range shot early in the second half.
Gazzaniga’s unconventional attempt to stop the Uruguayan’s swirling effort was ineffective, allowing the shot to sail past him, much to the delight of the 70,885 fans in attendance.
Those supporters were soon exasperated as Girona’s Lemar equalised in the 62nd minute. The Frenchman was afforded the time and space to unleash a shot from the edge of the area, sending a low strike through Eduardo Camavinga’s legs and beyond the stranded Lunin.
Following their goal, Girona appeared more dangerous with each attack, inciting a chorus of boos from a frustrated Bernabéu crowd aware of the implications of dropping further points.
The atmosphere worsened when Kylian Mbappé fired a near-post attempt directly at Gazzaniga, moments before his penalty appeal was dismissed.
As time ran out, Álvaro Arbeloa’s side was unable to secure all three points, extending their woes following consecutive defeats against Mallorca and Bayern Munich, while knowing that Barcelona could extend their lead to nine points in the title chase.
