Melbourne City delivered a commanding performance against the Western Sydney Wanderers at AAMI Park, securing a 3-0 victory despite facing a red card in the second half.
It was a memorable evening for Marcus Younis, who played a pivotal role by assisting Andreas Kuen for the first goal, scoring himself, setting up Elbasan Rashani for the third, and ultimately receiving a red card late in the match.
The Wanderers began the match with their usual intensity, forcing debutant James Nieuwenhuizen in the Isuzu UTE A-League to make a crucial save diving low to his right.
City opened the scoring in the 22nd minute when Kuen capitalised on a lapse from the Wanderers defence, turning and shooting from the edge of the box after controlling Younis’s cutback. His effort threaded through the crowd and past Wanderers keeper Lawrence Thomas.
Younis doubled the advantage shortly after when his long-range effort took a deflection off Anthony Pantazopoulos, wrong-footing Thomas and heading over the line.
Rashani marked the start of the second half with his first goal for Melbourne City, connecting beautifully with Younis’s deep right-side cross.
Despite his stellar performance with a goal and two assists, Younis’s night ended prematurely in the 68th minute after he received a second yellow card for clipping Alex Gersbach’s heel with his boot.
Post-red card, the match lost its rhythm, with few chances creating a stolid scoreline of 3-0.
City will now shift their focus to an upcoming clash with the Central Coast Mariners on Tuesday night, while Western Sydney prepares for the season’s final Sydney Derby on Saturday.
