Manchester United is on the verge of securing their spot in the next UEFA Champions League (UCL) following an entertaining 2-1 victory over Brentford, marking the Bees’ fifth consecutive defeat in the Premier League at Old Trafford.
Just two minutes into the match, there was a potential contender for goal of the season, as Kobbie Mainoo beautifully danced through a crowd of Brentford players, setting up Amad Diallo, who appeared poised to score.
However, the Ivorian’s attempt was thwarted by an impressive last-minute block from Sepp van den Berg.
Shortly after, it was Caoimhin Kelleher’s turn to shine, as goal-line technology confirmed he managed to stop Harry Maguire’s header just in time.
It was a troubling start for Keith Andrews’ side.
Casemiro broke the deadlock in the 11th minute, with Maguire providing the assist by nodding a cross from Bruno Fernandes back across the box, allowing the Brazilian to head in his ninth goal of the Premier League season, further enhancing what is already his most prolific scoring campaign.
Igor Thiago, another player in fine form, had a chance to respond quickly but missed his kick at the far post while being pressured by Luke Shaw.
Thiago would have two more significant opportunities before the half concluded, and Senne Lammens had to react swiftly to avert an own goal from Ayden Heaven.
In an open encounter, only an offside flag denied Amad at one end, while Benjamin Sesko eventually doubled the hosts’ lead just before half-time, thanks to another assist from Fernandes, curling the ball past Kelleher after brilliantly evading a defender.

The Portuguese star continued orchestrating play in the second half, with the knowledge that one more assist would see him equal the single-season Premier League record held by Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne.
However, it was Brentford who were knocking hardest at the door, as Thiago again misfired with another chance, only to be saved by an offside flag.
Dango Ouattara then struck the woodwork from close range, with Maguire courageously blocking his follow-up attempt.
As the match seemed to be fading, Mathias Jensen revived the contest with a brilliant strike into the corner from the edge of the box in the 87th minute, marking his career-high fifth goal against the Red Devils.
This set up a tense conclusion for the home side, but they managed to secure a critical victory.
United have now scored in 22 consecutive Premier League matches and could potentially clinch UCL qualification with a win against Liverpool at Old Trafford next week, assuming results elsewhere don’t grant it sooner.
Brentford’s winless run extends back to February, but they remain only two points behind sixth place, with the dream of first-ever European qualification still within reach.
