Harry Maguire, defender for Manchester United, has lauded coach Michael Carrick for the remarkable turnaround in the club’s fortunes following a 2-1 victory over Brentford in the Premier League, a win that brings them closer to a return to the Champions League after finishing 15th last season.
The club dismissed former coach Ruben Amorim in January after a tumultuous 14-month period that saw the players struggle to adapt to his tactics. Maguire credited Carrick for revitalising the team’s confidence and steering them back to winning ways.
“We faced two challenging matches right when Michael took over, and I think everyone was a bit worried about facing Arsenal and Man City, but we managed to secure all six points,” Maguire remarked to Sky Sports, following his assist for Casemiro’s opening goal against Brentford.
“Everyone’s bought into his vision, and we’ve come together as a team. We’re playing with confidence and we know we can score from anywhere.”
Currently sitting third, United comfortably secured victory, taking their points tally to 61, which places them 11 points ahead of sixth-placed Brighton with four matches remaining and five teams set to qualify for next season’s Champions League.
Under Carrick, United have triumphed in nine of their 13 fixtures, setting the stage for a return to Europe’s premier club competition.
“The results are a testament to the changes since the new manager arrived and the tactical shift that has led to improved results. When Ruben was at the helm, games were pretty balanced, yet we often ended up on the losing side,” Maguire explained.
“Now it feels like it’s the opposite — we’ve become significantly better in both defensive and offensive scenarios. We’re defending our own box far more effectively, and we’re proving to be more clinical in the opponent’s box.”
