Paul Gallen is calling for an end to the comparisons between Jarome Luai’s recent visit to Papua New Guinea and Lachlan Galvin’s departure from the Tigers, especially after Luai received a magnificent reception during his trip.
Luai was spotted in Port Moresby, where the PNG Chiefs were making a strong case for his potential signing, thanks to player option clauses that allow him to negotiate with other teams.
The four-time NRL champion returned to Sydney on Monday aboard a private jet and made a quick getaway from the waiting media by jumping into a car that was stationed on the tarmac.

This week, a sizeable media presence is anticipated at Tigers training, hoping to hear from Luai regarding his recent trip.
In stark contrast, Galvin’s move from the Tigers to the Bulldogs last year stemmed from his request for a contract release. Luai had expressed “team-first” sentiments on social media during the tumultuous period surrounding Galvin’s exit.
Gallen believes the two scenarios differ vastly.
Luai is contracted to the Tigers until the end of 2029. However, he possesses a player option every year, which he must decide to activate by April 30, giving him the freedom to discuss opportunities with rival clubs in the meantime.
“He’s not doing anything wrong; he’s just following the terms of his contract,” Gallen remarked on Nine’s 100% Footy.

“The situation with Lachlan Galvin was entirely different. Lachlan requested a release 18 months prior, but Jarome Luai isn’t asking for a release… I don’t see any problem with this,” Gallen remarked.
“I can’t understand why people are suggesting that he’s in the wrong with his club; he isn’t. Not at all.”
Cameron Smith pointed out that a potential move to PNG could be just one more milestone for Luai to achieve after representing NSW, playing for Samoa, and claiming four premierships with the Panthers.
“This is a new era for rugby league with PNG… so why not have a player who knows how to win guiding that initiative?” he added.
Allana Ferguson stated it would be “unwise” for Luai not to investigate the offer from PNG. Nonetheless, Smith believes the deal isn’t set in stone.
“At the end of the day, we’re all getting a bit carried away… he’s merely exercising his due diligence,” Smith commented.
“He might not even end up there. The Tigers are experiencing some exciting developments right now.”
Unlike typical contract discussions, PNG’s interest in Luai has been open and public.

His return to Sydney was orchestrated to avoid a large welcome, with a darkened vehicle swiftly transporting him off the runway. However, this has only intensified the excitement, as such scenes are rare in the NRL transfer landscape.
Phil Gould interpreted this as a “showcase” and a means for PNG to “make a statement” within the market, aiming to attract interest from players.
“I believe it’s been a calculated move to ensure everyone is aware… today was all about demonstrating that the PNG Chiefs are ready for business, eager to speak with top-tier players, and would love for a marquee signing like Luai to kick things off,” he explained.
“It’s had the desired impact; it’s sparked discussions about them and made headlines, prompting other players to consider, ‘If he’s going, maybe I should look into it as well’.”
