Inter Milan will be missing their captain and leading goal scorer, Lautaro Martinez, for the Serie A clash against Como this Sunday, as confirmed by the league leaders.
“Medical examinations conducted today (Friday) have identified a mild muscle strain in his left calf,” stated Inter, adding that the striker’s “condition will undergo reassessment in the upcoming days.”
Reports from Italian media indicate that the 28-year-old could make his comeback as early as the following week’s match at home against Cagliari.
Inter holds a seven-point lead over the revived reigning champions, Napoli, with just seven fixtures left in the Serie A season.
Martinez, who currently sits as the league’s top scorer with 16 goals this season, endured a six-week layoff due to muscle injuries between February and March.
Upon his return last weekend, the Argentine made an immediate impact by scoring two goals in a 5-2 victory over Roma.
During his absence, Inter faced a challenging March, suffering two losses and managing just one draw in three games, which reignited hope for their challengers.
They now face a tough away game against fourth-placed Como, keen to avoid providing any further motivation to Napoli and third-placed AC Milan, who trail by nine points.
In the absence of Martinez, Inter coach Cristian Chivu is likely to pair Marcus Thuram with Pio Esposito in attack.
