The situation in the nation’s capital regarding Jamal Fogarty has turned into a “complicated issue” for the Raiders, who risk losing their seasoned halfback next year.
The 31-year-old has recently been associated with a move to the Sea Eagles, with speculation intensifying over the weekend. This followed comments from coach Ricky Stuart regarding possible tampering, before the playmaker was officially available to opposing teams.
Fogarty’s contract with Canberra included an option for 2026, which needed to be activated by the end of round six, but that did not occur, leading to links with Manly.
Although CEO Tony Mestrov has denied that any discussions have taken place with Fogarty, the indications suggest he may depart the Raiders to take over from Daly Cherry-Evans.

Stuart has consistently voiced his intention to retain Fogarty for another season, but the prospect of long-term job security with another NRL club may prove too enticing.
Billy Slater remarked that it’s a balancing act for both the player and the club, highlighting that there is a clear “succession plan” in place for Fogarty’s potential exit in 2026 or beyond.
“It’s quite a complex scenario,” he shared on Nine’s Billy Slater Podcast.
“The Raiders have evidently developed a succession strategy, especially for their key positions, investing in and nurturing some of the nation’s finest young talent.
“Ethan Sanders is poised to take on the halfback role long-term for the Raiders, along with the promising young Queensland hooker [Owen Pattie] who is making an impact off the bench.
“They’re doing an excellent job of planning for the future, and they’ve been forthcoming with their players. Jamal Fogarty is well aware of where he stands.”

Fogarty is currently at the peak of his career, having started the season impressively for Canberra, yet players like Sanders and Ethan Strange are already committed long-term.
The predicament is anticipated to reach a resolution soon, with Slater noting that it may see Fogarty compelled to “leave” the Green Machine.

“Does he remain at Canberra for another year for slightly less pay, or does he pursue greater stability for his family long-term? He’s a fantastic player and there aren’t many halfbacks who manage the game like he does,” Slater elaborated.
“His kicking skills are exceptional, and if supported by quality teammates, he would be an excellent acquisition. It’s a difficult decision that only he can make.
“I believe this matter will resolve itself sooner rather than later; I’ve even heard that we might learn about Jamal Fogarty’s decision by the end of this week.
“I’m certain he’d prefer not to leave, but circumstances may compel him to do so.”
