Enjoy the highlights from the Round 25 showdown between Auckland FC and Western Sydney Wanderers.
Auckland FC and Western Sydney Wanderers played to an entertaining 1-1 draw at the bustling Go Media Stadium, with young forward Nicolas Milanovic netting his 11th goal of the season.
Although Western Sydney controlled the first half, it was Auckland FC who went into the break ahead; Felipe Gallegos curled a strike into the net from the edge of the area after capitalising on a misplaced pass from Wanderers goalkeeper Lawrence Thomas.
The visitors levelled the score in the 51st minute when Nicolas Milanovic struck with a fierce low shot that took goalkeeper Alex Paulsen by surprise.
As the match reached a thrilling climax, both teams had opportunities to clinch the win. Wanderers’ Jack Clisby came close, smashing a shot against the crossbar, while Auckland captain Hiroki Sakai was denied by Thomas.
This result sees Auckland FC extend their lead at the top of the Isuzu UTE A-League ladder to eight points.
Meanwhile, Alen Stajcic’s Wanderers maintain their place in the top six, sitting fourth on the ladder with four matches remaining.
The Wanderers looked likely to score first, with the action orchestrated by former Wellington Phoenix midfielder Bozhidar Kraev.
Kraev was initially denied from close range by Alex Paulsen, who bravely charged off his line to block the shot aimed right at him.
In the 29th minute, Kraev believed he had scored the opener after finishing a brilliant team move, but the goal was disallowed following a VAR review, with officials determining that forward Zac Sapsford was in an offside position during the build-up.
True to form, Auckland FC punished their opponents right before the half-time whistle.
Minutes after defender Marlee Francois had his shot saved by Thomas, and Francis De Vries struck the follow-up off the outside of the post during a chaotic sequence in the box, the Black Knights were rewarded with the opening goal due to a rare blunder from goalkeeper Thomas.
Under no significant pressure, Thomas slipped while trying to play the ball out from the back and inadvertently passed it straight to Gallegos, who calmly tucked it into an empty net to put his side 1-0 up.
Auckland’s Max Mata nearly capped off the half in spectacular fashion with an audacious bicycle kick, but Thomas managed to deflect the effort over the bar.
Despite facing that setback before the interval, the Wanderers came out firing after the break and quickly equalised.
Receiving the ball on the right side of the Auckland box, Milanovic cut in onto his left foot and unleashed a powerful low shot that caught Paulsen off-guard as Brandon Borrello crossed in front of him, allowing the ball to find the back of the net.
In a bid to secure a second goal, the Wanderers introduced striker Marcus Antonsson, who came close but ultimately found the side netting following a panic-induced scramble in the Auckland defence triggered by a long goal kick from Anthony Pantazopoulos.
Auckland then squandered a golden opportunity in the 83rd minute, as star striker Guillermo May skied a loose ball over the bar from close range after Clisby had made a fantastic clearance to relieve pressure on the Wanderers just moments earlier.
With the game heating up, the Wanderers nearly snatched victory in the 90th minute, as Clisby charged down the pitch and blasted a stunning strike that rebounded off the crossbar.
As the crossbar rattled, Auckland surged upfield and missed a chance to secure a late winner, as Hiroki Sakai’s left-footed shot was well saved by Thomas in the Wanderers’ goal.
