Lachie Neale has stated that he is “nowhere near” making a definitive choice regarding his AFL future, although he is optimistic about extending his time with the Brisbane Lions beyond 2026.
The dual Brownlow Medal winner’s personal circumstances have been under the spotlight in recent months, particularly following his tumultuous separation from his wife Jules, who has relocated to Perth with their children.
As Neale’s contract is set to expire at the conclusion of the 2026 season, speculation has escalated about a potential return to a Western Australian club, allowing him to be nearer to his kids.
In the lead-up to his 300th AFL match, where the Lions will clash with Melbourne at the MCG, Neale expressed his commitment to the back-to-back champions amid growing speculation regarding his future.
“(I’m) nowhere near a decision yet, but I know one thing: I love this football club,” Neale remarked.
“I’ll likely do everything in my power to stay, but if that doesn’t work out… we’ll assess everything over the next three to four months.”

While contemplating his next season’s decision, Neale stressed that his personal happiness and his connection to family will be critical factors in his choice.
“A lot of elements will influence that (decision),” he said.
“Everything matters: family, football, my own wellbeing.
“I aspire to win premierships every year, and the possibility of it being my last year next year doesn’t factor into my decision-making…
“Hopefully it’s not. I want to be wearing a Brisbane jumper until I’m 36. How old is Zorks (Dayne Zorko)? 37 … I’ll see how I track.”
“I’ve trained hard in the off-season and pre-season to ensure I have a solid year, and my body feels fantastic, so I’m hopeful I have a few more years ahead of me.”

In addition to the milestone weekend, Brisbane Lions co-captain Josh Dunkley will also be honoured as he takes to the field for his 200th AFL match.
“I’ll cherish this week with my family. It holds significant meaning. I expect it to be quite emotional,” Neale added.
“To share it with ‘Dunks’ is a special privilege. He’s my favourite teammate, so to run out together for a joint milestone is really significant, and I hope we can secure a victory in the process.”
“We love returning to the MCG… it’s our first time back since the grand final.”

“Returning to the rooms will evoke some fond memories, but we’ll need to shift our focus and get the job done.”
“We’re up against a team that has been playing some excellent football, so it won’t be easy to take down the Demons.”
Currently sitting sixth on the ladder, the back-to-back premiership winners will face off against the Melbourne Demons on Sunday afternoon.
