Lachie Neale says he is “nowhere near” making a final call regarding his future in the AFL, although he holds out hope of continuing with the Brisbane Lions beyond 2026.
The two-time Brownlow Medal recipient has faced significant attention surrounding his personal life in recent months following his tumultuous separation from his wife, Jules, who has relocated with their children back to Perth.
With his existing contract concluding at the end of the 2026 season, there has been rampant speculation that Neale might return to a Western Australian club to be closer to his family.
On the eve of his 300th AFL match against Melbourne at the MCG, Neale asserted that he will “do everything” possible to remain with the reigning premiers as questions about his future intensify.
“I’m nowhere near making a decision just yet, but I do know I have a great love for this football club,” Neale remarked.
“I’ll certainly try my utmost to stay, but if it doesn’t work out… we’ll evaluate all options over the next three to four months.”

In discussing his decision on where to play next season, Neale highlighted that his personal happiness and family connections would be crucial factors.
“A lot will factor into that (decision),” he stated.
“Everything. Family, football, and my own happiness.
“I’m eager to chase premierships every year, and whether next year is my last doesn’t factor into that.
“I hope that’s not the case. Ideally, I’d like to wear a Brisbane jersey until I’m 36. How old is Zorks (Dayne Zorko)? 37… I’ll see how I go.”
“I’ve prepared extensively during the off-season and pre-season to ensure a strong year, and my body feels great, so fingers crossed I’ve got a few more years ahead of me.”

As he marks this significant milestone, Brisbane Lions co-captain Josh Dunkley will also be in the spotlight, celebrating his 200th AFL game.
“I’ll cherish this week with my family. It means a lot and will likely be quite emotional,” Neale added.
“To share this moment with ‘Dunks’ is a real privilege. He’s my favourite teammate ever, so running out together for this joint milestone will be a special occasion, and hopefully, we can secure a win in the process.”
“We love returning to the MCG… it’s our first time back since the grand final.

“That moment will surely bring back fond memories as we step into the rooms, but we’ll need to focus and aim to get the job done.”
“We’re up against a side that’s been in great form at the MCG, so the Demons will be a tough challenge.”
The two-time reigning premiers currently find themselves in sixth place on the ladder and are set to clash with the Melbourne Demons this Sunday afternoon.
