Hawthorn has not yet extended a contract offer to key midfielder James Worpel, which raises the possibility of the former best and fairest winner departing at the conclusion of the season.
Having been sidelined since the Opening Round due to a syndesmosis injury, Worpel’s contract is set to expire at the end of 2024, although he has displayed strong performances in consecutive seasons for the Hawks.
However, as reported by Tom Morris, the chief sports reporter for 9News Melbourne, Hawthorn appears to be focusing its attention on other players during the upcoming trade period, potentially opening the door for Worpel’s exit.

“James Worpel is now considered available, as Hawthorn has yet to present a contract offer to the 2019 best and fairest winner, who is nearing a comeback from his ankle injury,” Morris stated.
“This lack of action has piqued the interest of Victorian clubs, with both St Kilda and Melbourne reportedly showing some preliminary interest in the 26-year-old.”
During the bye week, Hawthorn coach Sam Mitchell met with West Coast captain Oscar Allen, with the club also linked to potential trades for Harley Reid and Zak Butters.
This follows another busy trade season for the Hawks, who successfully acquired defenders Tom Barrass and Josh Battle earlier this year.
Morris further indicates that ruckman Lloyd Meek is on the cusp of signing a lengthy contract extension with the Hawks.
“Negotiations are ongoing between the Hawks and Lloyd Meek’s management for a new four-year deal for the player who is out of contract,” Morris noted. “All parties are optimistic that he will ultimately agree to recommit.”
