After weeks of rising tensions with coach Gian Piero Gasperini, Claudio Ranieri’s tenure as a senior advisor at AS Roma has come to an end. Gasperini had expressed his unwillingness to continue working alongside the former head coach, resulting in an unbridgeable rift that the club could not resolve, ultimately leading to a choice between the two.
In the clash between Ranieri and Gasperini, the current coach has emerged victorious, gaining the trust of the Friedkin Group, despite their high regard for the departing advisor. Gasperini’s ultimatum left no potential for a middle ground. Consequently, the connection between the former Roman manager and the Giallorossi has reached its conclusion.
The official club statement read: “AS Roma announces that its relationship with Claudio Ranieri has been terminated.”
“The club would like to express its gratitude to Claudio for his invaluable contributions to Roma. He guided the team through particularly challenging times, and we will always appreciate his hard work.”
“Looking ahead, our path is distinct. The club is on solid ground, exhibiting strong leadership and a definitive vision. AS Roma will always be our top priority.
“We have complete faith in the direction we are heading under the technical leadership of Gian Piero Gasperini, working towards the common goal of growth, improvement, and results that reflect our rich history.”
Claudio Ranieri will leave his position as senior advisor, a role he has held since the season’s inception, where he collaborated closely with the American ownership. Sporting director Massara, whom Ranieri appointed, will also be departing.
Gasperini never forged a strong working relationship with him, particularly concerning transfer dealings, and has publicly aired his grievances regarding the signings — or lack thereof — in recent months.
The fallout between Ranieri and Gasperini, who joined Roma following a nine-year spell at Atalanta, unfolded across various issues: from differing opinions on the transfer market to disagreements concerning the medical staff and injury recovery times, including the recent case of Brazilian player Wesley.
However, the breaking point was marked by Ranieri’s severe criticism of Gasperini right before the match against Pisa, during which he also acknowledged that the current coach was more of a third or fourth choice, with the final call being made by the ownership rather than himself.
This divide, underscored by a terse statement that Gasperini opted not to comment on at the time, heavily influenced discussions with the ownership and ultimately led to the ultimatum. The relationship deteriorated to such an extent that the two refrained from speaking during club lunches, leaving no possibility for reconciliation.
The primary beneficiary of this situation is Gasperini, who, bolstered by a three-year contract, now wields greater authority and autonomy in technical and transfer decisions. The coach is poised to assume a more empowered role at Roma, akin to the one he held at Atalanta.
As for Ranieri, there are talks of a potential position with the Italian Football Federation.
