Goalkeeper James Trafford has acknowledged that his comeback to Manchester City this season hasn’t unfolded as he had envisioned, with first-team chances proving scarce following the arrival of Gianluigi Donnarumma.
A graduate of City’s academy, Trafford recorded an impressive 29 clean sheets in 45 Championship matches for Burnley last season before rejoining the Premier League champions in July.
He initially featured in their first three league fixtures but has largely been limited to appearances in the FA Cup and League Cup since Italy’s goalkeeper Donnarumma joined on deadline day.
“The season has definitely been a bit of a rollercoaster for me as I haven’t had much playing time, and naturally, I had a tough choice to make over the summer,” Trafford shared with BBC Sport.
“When making decisions, everyone hopes for the best outcome, and while it hasn’t turned out that way, I’m focused on improving each day and maintaining a positive mindset and happiness.”
Despite his limited playing time at City, Trafford made his debut for England in March during a friendly against Uruguay and is eager to be part of Thomas Tuchel’s squad for the World Cup.
“Of course, I’d love to make the squad. It would be an incredible experience for me, a fantastic opportunity, but there’s not much I can do from now until then,” he added.
City will face Southampton in the FA Cup semi-finals on Saturday.
