Newcastle United’s squad has seen a decline in confidence following a string of defeats, manager Eddie Howe remarked on Friday. The Premier League side is gearing up for their challenging visit to title contenders Arsenal, but will be without the services of injured forward Anthony Gordon.
Newcastle’s form has taken a hit, resulting in four consecutive losses across all competitions, including three in the Premier League. This disappointing streak has seen them drop to 14th in the league, significantly diminishing their chances of European qualification next season after their participation in the Champions League this term.
“I think we’ve lost a bit of confidence, which was evident against Bournemouth last Saturday. Given our recent results and the way things have unfolded, players are not performing at their peak,” Howe told the media.
“We possess some incredibly talented players within the squad who are currently underachieving, and it’s hard to quantify the impact that a dip in confidence can have on individuals.”
“My focus this week has been to support the players and assist them in delivering their best work. Together, we aim to find a way to return to our optimal performance levels, both individually and as a team.”
Unfortunately, Howe confirmed that Gordon, who has netted 17 goals this season, will not be in the line-up after missing the Bournemouth match and not participating in training this week due to a hip injury.
“It’s not a serious injury, but it won’t be healed in time for this game. We hope he’ll be available for the next one,” Howe added.
Gordon’s absence creates further complications for Howe in terms of player selection upfront, especially as the club’s record signing, Nick Woltemade, has recently been excluded from starting line-ups despite being fully fit.
“It’s a tough position because our centre-forwards have been contributing. Anthony Gordon had been scoring as a number nine, and now Will Osula has stepped in and scored in that role,” Howe explained.
“It’s a tricky situation; you need to reward players based on their performances. Currently, I’ve chosen to go with a different option instead of Nick. There’s no issue with his fitness, and when he does play, he must aim to deliver the goals we require.”
Howe didn’t hold back regarding the implications of ongoing poor performances, suggesting there may be significant changes in the squad during the summer if results fail to improve.
“If the team continues to underperform, there will be more substantial changes in the summer than in the past. One must react to the circumstances. That’s a continuous process that happens daily, behind the scenes,” he stated.
“I believe the players are aware of this. It’s their responsibility to strive for their best, and I share that responsibility to provide the best support for them and the staff. It’s all part of the role.”
