Melbourne managed to fend off a determined Richmond team in the traditional Anzac Day eve showdown at the MCG.
However, the victory was bittersweet as emerging star forward Jai Culley sustained a non-contact knee injury during the match.
The 23-year-old previously tore his ACL while playing for West Coast in 2023 and now seems to have incurred a serious injury to his other knee.

Friday night saw no one escape unscathed, as boundary umpire Patrick Dineen also had to leave the field due to an arm injury after tumbling backwards early in play.
Dineen lost his balance when a kicked ball was heading towards him, causing him to fall and attempt to brace his fall with his arm, which resulted in his injury.
The Demons displayed too much strength for a Richmond team that fought valiantly for three quarters before fading, with Melbourne emerging victorious with a scoreline of 19.12 (126) to 11.6 (72).
This defeat extends Richmond’s disheartening losing streak to 12 matches, stretching over 279 days, and they’ve only managed to secure two wins from their last 21 encounters.
While the Tigers stayed competitive for a large portion of the evening, closing the gap to 11 points in the third quarter, Melbourne surged in the final term, scoring six goals to just one from Richmond, widening the final margin to 54 points.

Bringing the team back from the lows of their once triumphant triple-premiership era was always set to be a tough task, and the mounting number of defeats is weighing heavily.
Nonetheless, there were bright moments for Richmond supporters. No. 7 draft pick Sam Cumming made his debut and displayed immediate potential by scoring two goals.
But the standout performer on the night was Kysaiah Pickett, who has truly become a midfield star this season, finishing with 29 disposals, four goals, and even pulling off the mark of the night in the dying moments to seal his performance.
Brody Mihocek added three goals to the scoreboard, while Caleb Windsor had a strong showing with 25 disposals and two goals as he continues to shine as a promising young talent for the Dees.
For Richmond, established midfielder Dion Prestia led the way with 28 disposals, while the acting captain Jack Ross also put in a solid performance with 27.

First-round draft pick Sam Grlj recorded 21 disposals, while No.1 pick Sam Lalor contributed a goal along with 16 disposals.
The Tigers will need to rely on this youthful talent as they seek to turn their fortunes around.
Meanwhile, Melbourne gears up for one of the toughest challenges in football as they prepare to face Sydney at the SCG.
Richmond, on the other hand, will have a chance to halt their losing streak against West Coast in Perth.
