Everton’s manager, David Moyes, returns to the London Stadium on Saturday with vital insights that could jeopardise West Ham United’s chances of staying out of the Premier League relegation zone.
Moyes had two tenures as West Ham manager, successfully steering them clear of relegation during his initial short stint, before leading them to European competition in his second term, culminating in victory in the 2023 UEFA Conference League.
Currently, Moyes’s Everton is in the hunt for European qualification, while West Ham, under Nuno Espirito Santo, sits precariously in 17th place, embroiled in a fierce relegation fight.
Despite Moyes having little left to prove, there may linger a feeling amongst him that he wasn’t entirely appreciated by West Ham’s supporters as he makes his return to East London.
With West Ham just two points ahead of 18th-placed Tottenham Hotspur—who will be up against bottom club Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday—a win is essential; failure to secure three points could see them slide back into the relegation zone with four matches remaining.
Espirito Santo is acutely aware of the threat posed by Everton, remarking that Moyes’s comprehensive knowledge of the West Ham squad presents a significant challenge ahead of this crucial match.
“Managers returning to former clubs have the upper hand because they know the players, sometimes even the routines,” said the Portuguese manager, who succeeded Graham Potter in September. “In this case, David understands the routines and knows the players. Therefore, we need to introduce new tactics to avoid becoming predictable.”
Espirito Santo, who led Nottingham Forest to Europe last season before being dismissed in September, emphasised that taking on a former club as a manager is far from just another match.
“It’s always a special occasion due to the respect and affection you hold for past clubs, but your desire to win and compete remains paramount,” he noted.
West Ham missed a chance to pull four points clear of Tottenham after settling for a goalless draw against Crystal Palace on Monday, but Espirito Santo remains optimistic about avoiding relegation, especially considering they were seven points adrift of safety in January.
“The team’s performance instills hope and belief throughout the club that we are competing well,” he added.
“With all the squad available, having the full array of options to support us is crucial for our campaign.”
