Chelsea’s interim coach, Calum McFarlane, has indicated that the squad is not fixating on the dismissal of former manager Liam Rosenior. Instead, the focus is firmly set on securing a victory against Leeds United this weekend to progress to the FA Cup final.
McFarlane, who took on the interim coaching role briefly in January following Enzo Maresca’s departure, has been reinstated after the club parted ways with Rosenior on Wednesday, following a disappointing five-match losing streak in the Premier League.
“We haven’t held a clear-the-air meeting; our focus is on preparing for Sunday,” McFarlane, who was part of Rosenior’s coaching team, told journalists on Friday.
“It’s crucial that our attention is fully on the match this Sunday. There’s no need to dwell on past events; our focus is solely on what lies ahead for us on Sunday.”
McFarlane revealed that he had a conversation with Rosenior on the day of his departure.
“The discussion went well; I have a lot of admiration for Liam. We hadn’t known each other prior to his arrival here, but he welcomed me warmly. I hold a strong relationship with him and I’m truly disappointed that things didn’t pan out as hoped,” he expressed.
Estevao sidelined for the season
Chelsea, who are aiming for their first FA Cup title since 2018, will miss the services of winger Estevao for the remainder of the season following a hamstring injury sustained during last week’s 1-0 defeat to Manchester United.
“Unfortunately, Estevao won’t be available for us this season. He’ll be out for some time,” McFarlane noted amidst media reports suggesting the 19-year-old Brazilian international could also be a doubt for the upcoming World Cup in June.
Currently sitting eighth in the Premier League, Chelsea finds themselves seven points adrift of the top five, which would secure Champions League qualification. Nevertheless, McFarlane assures that the players are rallying together as they strive to finish the season on a high note.
“We’ve had discussions with the team regarding the remaining fixtures and what’s at stake. Everyone is united, and our intent is to win every match from now until the end of the season,” he stated.
