Barcelona manager Hansi Flick stated on Friday that injured prodigy Lamine Yamal is set to return for the World Cup this summer with Spain, and he expects the young talent to come back even “stronger” than before.
The 18-year-old has been sidelined for the remainder of the season due to a hamstring injury, which he sustained during Wednesday’s LaLiga match against Celta Vigo.
Lamine Yamal was instrumental in securing a penalty for his team, which he then converted to maintain Barcelona’s nine-point lead over Real Madrid at the top of the table. However, he immediately felt his injury and was subsequently substituted.
“This situation is challenging for us, but particularly for him,” Flick shared with reporters.
“He is aware that this is his first muscle injury. What I sense is that he remains highly focused and motivated. Although he is out for us, I believe he will be back for the World Cup even stronger than before.”
Lamine, who came second in the Ballon d’Or voting last year and played a vital role in Spain’s success at EURO 2024, has been a pivotal player in Barcelona’s quest to defend their LaLiga title.
Flick mentioned that Lamine may have felt discomfort after the foul that led to his penalty kick but did not grasp the extent of his injury, as he had never experienced such an issue before.
“He sensed something after the foul, but he didn’t believe it was serious. He chose to take the penalty, and perhaps that’s when it worsened,” Flick explained.
“It’s his first muscle injury, so it’s part of learning to heed the signals his body provides.
“It’s not easy for someone so young, but ultimately, it’s a learning experience.”

This season, Lamine has netted 24 goals and registered 18 assists across all competitions for Barcelona, with nine goals in his last twelve league outings.
“I have immense respect for what he has accomplished in recent weeks. He has reached an extraordinary level. He’s more mature than his 18 years suggest,” Flick remarked.
“He’s intelligent, astute, and knows exactly what he wants. This injury does have an impact on him… but he needs to concentrate on the recovery process to become fitter and better.”
Barcelona is scheduled to face Getafe on Saturday, while Real Madrid will take on Real Betis on Friday.
