Strasbourg overcame a 2-0 deficit from the first leg, delivering a stunning 4-0 triumph against Mainz at home, marking the club’s inaugural progression to the semi-finals of a major European tournament.
After trailing 2-0 from the first leg in Germany, Strasbourg exploded into action midway through the first half, aiming to reduce Mainz’s advantage.
The game at Stade de la Meinau started flat, but it nearly took a dramatic turn in the 19th minute when Dominik Kohr escaped a potential red card for elbowing Diego Moreira. Gary O’Neil’s heated appeals from the sidelines fell on deaf ears, and Moreira nearly got his revenge moments later with an acrobatic scissor-kick that forced a brilliant save from Mainz goalkeeper Daniel Batz.
As Strasbourg finally found their footing, Sebastian Nanasi opened the scoring, making a perfectly timed run to convert Julio Enciso’s cut-back, as the home side started to assert their dominance.
Abdoul Ouattara narrowly missed from distance with a curling half-volley, while Enciso drew another superb save from Batz as Strasbourg exuded confidence. The duo then combined to help Ouattara level the aggregate score with a powerful header from close range, erasing Mainz’s lead.
The opportunity to regroup at half-time saw Urs Fischer make tactical changes, introducing playmaker Nadiem Amiri to bring back control. However, Mainz continued to struggle against Strasbourg’s relentless pressing as the hosts pressed forward.
Racing squandered a golden chance to jump ahead in the aggregate when Batz saved a penalty taken by substitute Emmanuel Emegha following a foul on Valentin Barco inside the box.
Despite this setback, Strasbourg’s determination paid off. Martial Godo danced through Mainz’s frail defence, allowing Enciso to capitalise by firing Racing into a commanding 3-0 lead on the night, completely turning the tie around.
Just five minutes later, Strasbourg struck again, with Emgeha making amends for his earlier penalty miss. Enciso, capping off an outstanding performance, provided another assist, setting the Chelsea-bound striker up to confirm their place in the last four of the competition.
With their late attempt to claw back into the match proving fruitless, a crestfallen Mainz will reflect on the missed opportunity to build on the advantage gained from the first leg. This night will certainly be a memorable one for O’Neil’s squad.
