Strasbourg rebounded spectacularly from a 2-0 deficit in the first leg, demolishing Mainz with a stunning 4-0 victory at home, marking the club’s first-ever berth in the semi-finals of a prestigious European tournament.
Facing a 2-0 deficit from the initial leg in Germany, Strasbourg ignited their campaign midway through the first half, determined to close the gap on Mainz.
Following a subdued start at the Stade de la Meinau, the match nearly took a dramatic turn just 19 minutes in when Dominik Kohr fortuitously escaped a red card for elbowing Diego Moreira. Gary O’Neil’s vehement protests went unheard, and Moreira almost exacted immediate revenge with an audacious scissor-kick that prompted a sharp save from Mainz goalkeeper Daniel Batz.
As Strasbourg began to assert themselves, Sebastian Nanasi broke the deadlock, perfectly timing his run to convert Julio Enciso’s cut-back, firmly establishing the hosts’ dominance.
Abdoul Ouattara’s half-volley just missed the target from distance, and Enciso forced another impressive save from Batz as Strasbourg burst with confidence, before the duo combined again, with Ouattara smashing in a header from close range to level the aggregate score.
Having the rare opportunity to regroup at half-time, Urs Fischer introduced playmaker Nadiem Amiri in a bid to regain control; however, Strasbourg’s relentless pressing continued to trouble Mainz, keeping the hosts on the front foot.
Racing squandered a golden opportunity to take the lead in the aggregate, with Batz saving a penalty from substitute Emmanuel Emegha after Valentin Barco was brought down in the box.
Nevertheless, Strasbourg’s persistence ultimately paid off. Martial Godo weaved through Mainz’s shaky defence, allowing Enciso to capitalise and fire Racing into a commanding 3-0 lead on the night, completely shifting the momentum of the tie.
Just five minutes later, Strasbourg struck again as Emegha made amends for his earlier miss, with Enciso capping off a brilliant performance by providing another superb assist that allowed the Chelsea-bound striker to seal their advancement to the final four of the competition.

With their late attempts to find a way back into the match proving fruitless, a dejected Mainz will reflect on the missed opportunity to capitalise on their significant first-leg lead, a night that will surely be remembered by O’Neil’s side.
