Just hours ahead of the Essendon Bombers’ highly anticipated match against the Gold Coast Suns, club president Andrew Welsh found himself embroiled in a dramatic citizen’s arrest on the Gold Coast.
On Friday night, while dining with Essendon CEO Tim Roberts and some club sponsors, Welsh witnessed a white Ford Ranger ute careen through a nearby bus stop before crashing into a light pole.
In a rapid response, Welsh intervened, apprehending the driver who attempted to flee the scene. He successfully tackled the man to the ground at approximately 7:30 PM.
With the help of another bystander in Broadbeach, the duo managed to restrain the individual as stunned onlookers looked on, just moments before police arrived on the scene.
“We saw several people rushing over to the bus stop,” a witness recounted to News Corp.

“It was evident that there were two individuals who executed the citizen’s arrest, ensuring the man stayed down.”
“The scene was incredibly chaotic, but the police arrived promptly.”

“It’s incredible that no one was struck by the ute during the incident.”
On the following afternoon, Essendon will seek to build on their momentum after snapping a 17-game losing streak against Melbourne the previous weekend.
