In the lead-up to the Essendon Bombers’ match against the Gold Coast Suns, club president Andrew Welsh found himself involved in a ‘chaotic’ citizen’s arrest on the Gold Coast.
While dining on Friday evening with Essendon CEO Tim Roberts and some club sponsors ahead of the Round 6 clash, Welsh observed a white Ford Ranger utility vehicle careen through a nearby bus stop and collide with a light pole.
Taking matters into his own hands, Welsh apprehended the driver, who was attempting to escape, and brought him to the ground at approximately 7:30pm.
With the help of a fellow bystander in Broadbeach, they managed to restrain the man on the ground in front of shocked witnesses, just before police could arrive.
“We then saw people rushing over to the bus stop,” a spectator recounted to News Corp.

“There were two individuals who carried out a citizen’s arrest and had their knees on his back,” another witness recalled.
“It was an incredibly frantic scene, but the police arrived in no time.”

“It’s incredible that no one was caught in the path of the vehicle,” said one onlooker.
The following afternoon, Essendon is eager to maintain their newfound momentum after finally ending a 17-game losing streak against Melbourne the previous weekend.
