Arsenal faced their first Premier League defeat in nine matches, falling 2-1 at the Emirates Stadium to Bournemouth. This result opens the door for Manchester City to narrow the gap at the top of the standings this weekend.
While Arsenal’s ambition of an extraordinary quadruple may be slipping away, both the Premier League and UEFA Champions League still provide pathways for Mikel Arteta’s side to etch their names in Gunners’ history.
Bournemouth, heading into this matchup unbeaten in 11 Premier League fixtures—the longest active streak—struck first, finding the net with their initial shot on target just after the 15-minute mark. Eli Junior Kroupi capitalised, tapping in at the far post for his 10th goal of the season after William Saliba inadvertently deflected Adrien Truffert’s low cross into his path.
As has been the case for Arsenal in recent domestic outings, they struggled to gain momentum before the interval, but a lifeline came just after the half-hour mark.
Gabriel Magalhaes’ close-range strike hit Ryan Christie’s hand, prompting referee Michael Oliver to award a penalty, which Viktor Gyokeres converted confidently.
Despite this, Bournemouth looked the more threatening team through to the end of the half, with David Raya making a crucial save from an Evanilson attempt, while Alex Scott shot over from distance.

After the break, Bournemouth maintained their spirited approach, enjoying significant possession within Arsenal’s territory. The home side, however, appeared rattled by the pressing expectations of their supporters, their unease evident throughout the ground.
Arsenal did manage to find the back of the net midway through the second half, but Gyokeres was flagged offside prior to scoring past Dorde Petrovic.
Desperate for a game-changing moment, stand-in captain Declan Rice answered the call, forcing Petrovic to tip a powerful long-range shot over the bar.
At the other end, Christie and Scott squandered opportunities by shooting well over, but Scott struck a decisive blow to Arsenal’s title aspirations with a well-placed shot in the 74th minute, finishing coolly after receiving a set-up from Evanilson.
In response, Arsenal pushed forward in pursuit of an equaliser, and Petrovic had to stay alert to deny Gabriel Jesus’ header with a crucial save.
Ultimately, however, Arsenal lacked the requisite pressure on the Bournemouth defence in the dying stages, allowing the visitors to clinch all three points.
This result temporarily catapults Bournemouth into the Premier League’s top half ahead of the weekend’s fixtures, and Andoni Iraola deserves commendation for how he has shaped his side, particularly following the offseason departures of key players.
On the other hand, Arteta will be increasingly worried about his squad’s resilience as they approach the season’s critical phase, and he will expect a strong response when Arsenal face Sporting CP on Wednesday.
