Arsenal faced a disappointing first Premier League (PL) loss in nine matches, succumbing to a 2-1 defeat at the Emirates Stadium against Bournemouth, which allows Manchester City the opportunity to narrow the top of the table gap this weekend.
Although Arsenal’s quest for a remarkable quadruple may have taken a hit, the Premier League and UEFA Champions League (UCL) still present chances for Mikel Arteta’s team to etch their names in Gunners’ folklore.
The Cherries arrived at this contest carrying an unbeaten streak of 11 PL games—the longest current run in the league—and they took the lead with the first shot on target just after the 15-minute mark. Eli Junior Kroupi found the net, tapping in at the far post for his 10th goal in the top tier this season, after William Saliba inadvertently deflected Adrien Truffert’s low cross into his path.
As has been the pattern domestically in recent weeks, Arsenal found it challenging to find rhythm before halftime, yet they were handed a lifeline around the 30-minute mark.
Gabriel Magalhaes’ close-range shot struck Ryan Christie’s arm, convincing referee Michael Oliver to award a penalty, which Viktor Gyokeres converted confidently from the spot.
Despite that brief resurgence, Bournemouth appeared to pose a greater threat before half-time, with David Raya saving a low shot from Evanilson and Alex Scott sending an attempt over the crossbar from distance.

After the interval, Bournemouth maintained their attacking intent, dominating possession within Arsenal’s half. The home side, on the other hand, visibly battled against the expectations of their fans, with their anxiety evident throughout.
They did manage to find the back of the net midway through the second half, but Gyokeres was flagged offside prior to calmly slotting past Dorde Petrovic.
With the need for a commanding presence, stand-in captain Declan Rice stepped up, forcing Petrovic to tip a powerful shot over the bar from long range.
Bournemouth’s Christie and Scott missed the target with shots from distance, but the latter struck a critical blow to Arsenal’s title chances in the 74th minute by converting confidently past Raya after receiving a well-timed pass from Evanilson.
In a bid to respond, Arteta’s side pushed forward searching for an equaliser, and Petrovic had to act quickly to divert a header from substitute Gabriel Jesus.
Despite Arsenal’s attempts to apply pressure late in the game, they fell short against a resolute Bournemouth defence, who clinched all three points.
This victory sees Bournemouth temporarily ascend into the upper half of the PL rankings ahead of the weekend’s fixtures, and Andoni Iraola deserves significant praise for how he has shaped his squad following the loss of numerous star players over the past year.
Conversely, Arteta will find himself increasingly troubled by his team’s apparent lack of resilience as the season intensifies. He will expect a strong response when Arsenal take on Sporting CP on Wednesday.
