Elfsborg and Malmo are enjoying a strong start in the Allsvenskan, both sitting at the summit with seven points each from three matches played, following their 1-0 victories away at Degerfors and Djurgarden, respectively, last Friday night.
Djurgarden vs. Malmo
In a highly anticipated clash at 3Arena in Stockholm, two of Sweden’s football heavyweights faced off, with Djurgarden aiming to maintain their perfect record while Malmo sought to demonstrate that their opening-game draw against Orgryte was merely a minor setback.
Although Djurgarden dominated possession during the first half, they struggled to create clear opportunities. They managed 10 shots compared to Malmo’s three, but only Patric Aslund’s attempt hit the target, which was comfortably saved by Robin Olsen.
At the hour mark, Malmo capitalised on their first significant chance; Otto Rosengren’s expertly taken corner found Sead Haksabanovic at the back post, and the former Djurgarden player struck a perfect cushioned volley that nestled into the bottom corner.
Despite having two-thirds of the possession during the match, Djurgarden could muster only a single shot on goal, with Bo Hegland coming closest to troubling Olsen. MFF held firm for the win, although it was soured by an injury to Pontus Jansson in stoppage time.
Degerfors 0-1 Elfsborg
Following a disappointing defeat to Sirius in the opening round, Degerfors bounced back with a convincing win over Halmstad last time out. However, for the third consecutive fixture, the visiting side claimed all the points, as Elfsborg joined Malmo at the top of the table with a tight 1-0 victory at Stora Valla.
Similar to the match in Stockholm, the first half was devoid of clear chances, and the sole goal materialised shortly after the break from a set piece. Elfsborg earned a free-kick just outside the home team’s area, and Julius Magnusson curled it around the wall and past goalkeeper Matvei Igonen.
Ludvig Fritzson came closest for the home side, with Marcus Rafferty going down on the edge of the area but receiving a yellow card for simulation. Ultimately, Degerfors lacked the necessary drive to get back into contention, leaving Elfsborg sitting at the top of the table, ahead of Malmo on alphabetical order.
