Deportivo Alaves enhanced their chances of avoiding relegation in LaLiga after clinching a sensational late equaliser against Real Sociedad in a gripping 3-3 stalemate, which extended their unbeaten streak to four matches (W1, D3).
Entering this fixture with a three-point cushion above the relegation zone, Alaves got off to a blistering start against their Basque adversaries by taking the lead within just three minutes.
Abderrahman Rebbach’s low cross into the area seemed straightforward for Duje Caleta-Car to clear, but the Croatian defender uncharacteristically redirected the ball into his own net, handing the visitors an early advantage.
However, Sociedad quickly regrouped and sought an immediate equaliser, which they found in the 14th minute when Luka Sucic struck a magnificent 25-yard effort into the bottom corner.
The match remained thrilling as the first half unfolded, with both teams exchanging goals in a rapid succession.
First, Ibrahim Diabate capitalised on a loose ball to clinically finish for Alaves, before La Real levelled the score once again with Benat Turrientes’ stunning long-range shot that hit the post and ricocheted in off goalkeeper Antonio Sivera.
As half-time approached, the hosts attempted to turn the tide in their favour, coming close to taking the lead when Ander Barrenetxea’s promising effort was blocked in the area.
Having triumphed in their past three LaLiga clashes against Sociedad, El Glorioso started the second half with intent, controlling possession as they pushed forward.
It was, however, Sociedad who netted the game’s fifth goal in the 60th minute, as Takefusa Kubo delivered a pinpoint cross that Orri Oskarsson headed home, marking the Icelandic striker’s sixth goal of the season.
As Alaves sought an equaliser with 25 minutes left on the clock, Lucas Boye squandered two close-range opportunities, while the Sociedad defence held firm under mounting pressure.
Toni Martinez missed another excellent chance for the visitors late in the game, and Sociedad were reduced to ten men following a reckless tackle from Sergio Gomez.
Eager to take advantage of their numerical superiority in the closing moments, Alaves surged forward in search of a dramatic equaliser, which finally arrived in the seventh minute of stoppage time when Boye unleashed a stunning shot into the corner beyond Alex Remiro, securing a remarkable point just as the game seemed lost.
