Deportivo Alaves enhanced their prospects of remaining in LaLiga by securing a dramatic late equaliser against Real Sociedad in a thrilling 3-3 encounter, extending their unbeaten streak to four matches (W1, D3).
Starting the match with a three-point cushion above the relegation zone, Alaves got off to a dream start against their Basque adversaries, scoring within the first three minutes.
Abderrahman Rebbach’s low cross into the box appeared straightforward for Duje Caleta-Car to deal with, but inexplicably, the Croatian centre-back turned the ball into his own net, handing the visitors an early advantage.
Refusing to let this misfortune deter them, Sociedad immediately looked for a way back into the match, and their efforts paid off in the 14th minute when Luka Sucic found the bottom corner with a stunning strike from 25 yards.
The pulsating nature of the match continued as the first half unfolded, with both sides scoring within a three-minute interval.
First, Ibrahim Diabate capitalised on a loose ball to find the back of the net for Alaves, but La Real quickly equalised again when Benat Turrientes unleashed a spectacular long-range shot that hit the post and ricocheted off Antonio Sivera into the goal.
The hosts pressed for an advantage before half-time and came close with Ander Barrenetxea’s promising shot being blocked inside the box.
Having enjoyed victory in their last three LaLiga encounters against Sociedad, El Glorioso began the second half positively, dominating possession in the final third.
However, it was Sociedad who netted the game’s fifth goal on the hour mark, as Takefusa Kubo delivered a pinpoint cross that Orri Oskarsson headed in, marking the Icelandic striker’s sixth goal of the season.
Alaves intensified their search for an equaliser with 25 minutes remaining, but Lucas Boye failed to convert two close-range opportunities as the hosts’ defence stood resolute under pressure.
Losing another golden opportunity late in the match, Toni Martinez couldn’t find the target for the visitors, while Sociedad was reduced to ten men due to a reckless challenge from Sergio Gomez.
Eager to capitalise on their numerical advantage in the dying minutes, Alaves surged forward in pursuit of a late equaliser, which finally came in the seventh minute of stoppage time when Boye unleashed a stunning shot into the corner of the net, securing a dramatic point for the team.
