The iconic Makybe Diva has sadly passed away at the age of 26 on Saturday.
She is renowned for her historic achievement of winning three consecutive Melbourne Cups from 2003 to 2005, along with clinching the 2005 Cox Plate.
Owner Tony Santic has confirmed that she succumbed to a brief struggle with colic.

Born in the UK, Makybe Diva earned a staggering $14 million in prize money throughout her illustrious career.
In a statement following her passing, Santic expressed his deep affection, saying, “From the day she entered our lives, she was never just a racehorse; she was family. She has given us moments that Australia will always cherish, but more importantly, she brought us joy every single day. She was loved right from the start and remained loved throughout her life.”
Jockey Glen Boss, who partnered with Makybe Diva in all three of her Melbourne Cup victories, paid his respects to the legendary horse.
“We’ve just received the news that my incredible partner in crime, Makybe Diva, has passed away,” he shared on social media.
“She was remarkable right up to the end. What can we say? She has left an extraordinary mark on Australian sport, far beyond just racing.”

“She was the gift that just kept giving. I don’t think we will ever witness something like this in our sport again. Winning three consecutive Melbourne Cups is something extraordinary.”
“She was a true champion. Today is a tribute to her remarkable legacy.”
“On a personal level, the gratitude I feel is immense. I had the privilege of seeing her just a few months ago, and she looked stunning. Her eyes were bright, her coat was flawless, and her hooves were in excellent condition. However, I had a feeling that at 26, it might have been our last encounter, but what a moment we shared.”
“I have so many cherished memories. It’s a somber day, yet what an extraordinary gift she was.”
Boss went on to pour a beer into one of his Melbourne Cups, raising a heartfelt toast to the Diva.
“Thank you for the memories.”
Australian racing analyst Gareth Hall remarked on social media: “Makybe Diva was a champion who achieved the impossible. Three Melbourne Cups is something we’re unlikely to see repeated. Not to mention her Cox Plate victory along the way. A true legend.”
Neil Wilson, Chairman of the Victorian Racing Club, has extended his sympathies.
“Makybe Diva was more than just a champion – she truly transcended the realm of racing. Her three successive Melbourne Cup victories rank among the most iconic milestones in Australian sporting history, and the memories she gifted us will remain etched forever,” he stated.
“Our sincerest condolences go out to her connections and the wider racing community, who will certainly feel the depth of this loss.”
Makybe Diva was named Australian Champion Racehorse of the Year in consecutive years, 2004-2005 and 2005-2006.
At the time of her passing, she was enjoying her retirement in Gnarwarre, near Geelong, in regional Victoria.
