Italy, having missed out on the World Cup finals for the third time in a row, is set to return to the pitch for two friendly matches in June. Under-21 coach Silvio Baldini will oversee the squad as they face Luxembourg and Greece, as confirmed by the Italian Football Federation on Friday.
The Azzurri’s failure to secure a place in this year’s World Cup in North America prompted the resignation of Gabriele Gravina, the President of the Italian Football Federation, amid mounting political pressure. Additionally, former goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon stepped down from his role as the delegation chief, and head coach Gennaro Gattuso also parted ways with the team.
Italy will play Luxembourg in an away match on June 3, followed by a clash against Greece on June 7 in Crete.
The team is poised to kick off their campaign in the fifth edition of the UEFA Nations League in September, where they have been drawn into Group 1 of League A alongside France, Belgium, and Turkey.
