Italy, who have missed out on the World Cup finals for the third consecutive time, is set to return to the pitch for two friendly matches in June. Under-21 coach Silvio Baldini will take the helm for these encounters against Luxembourg and Greece, as announced by the Italian Football Federation on Friday.
The Azzurri’s inability to qualify for this year’s World Cup in North America led to the resignation of Italian Football Federation President Gabriele Gravina amid mounting political pressure, while former goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon stepped down from his role as delegation chief for the team. Head coach Gennaro Gattuso has also parted ways with the squad.
Italy will play Luxembourg away on June 3, followed by a match against Greece on June 7 in Crete.
The squad will kick off their campaign in the fifth edition of the UEFA Nations League in September, where they find themselves in Group 1 of League A alongside France, Belgium, and Turkey.
