Cristian Chivu, the head coach of Inter Milan, has come to the support of Alessandro Bastoni, who has faced intense criticism following Italy’s World Cup playoff defeat. Chivu lauded the centre-back’s bravery and sense of duty, while also condemning the excessive media attention surrounding the club.
Bastoni has been under scrutiny from both Italian media and rival fans since Inter’s victory over Juventus on Valentine’s Day, where he was accused of diving to get Pierre Kalulu sent off and subsequently celebrated the dismissal.
The international break did little to alleviate the pressure on him. His reckless foul during the first half resulted in Italy being reduced to ten men, ultimately leading to their elimination in the World Cup playoff against Bosnia via penalties.
“In football, what truly matters is the respect you have among your teammates. It’s about your contributions and your character,” Chivu told reporters ahead of Sunday’s clash with AS Roma.
“I’m certain he’s disappointed with the way things turned out, but at the same time, he appreciates the backing he received from his national teammates as well as those here at the club.
“He stood up in a challenging moment, showing strength and commitment to represent his country and pursue the dream that every Italian holds dear.”
Bastoni not only had to deal with negative media attention, but he also missed Inter’s latest match due to injury prior to joining the national squad.
“In spite of the obstacles, and his physical state at that time, he made himself available, which holds great significance for me,” Chivu remarked.
“I comprehend what it’s like to be on crutches for ten days and then take on responsibility in such a critical match.”
Chivu responded defiantly when asked about the media frenzy following the Juventus game, redirecting the discourse towards the reporters by suggesting a double standard when it comes to Inter.
“I haven’t observed the same response since then, but when it’s Inter, if someone suggests Inter have the advantage, it turns into a public affair,” Chivu stated.
“However, when incidents occur against Inter, suddenly silence prevails. That’s a question I believe should be posed to you, as it’s your duty to provide an answer.”
Words of Encouragement, Not Condemnation
Inter had five players involved in Italy’s defeat, while 20-year-old forward Pio Esposito missed the opening penalty in the shootout.
“What mattered to me, and I asked him when I saw him, was whether he had chosen to take the penalty,” Chivu conveyed.
“His response was affirmative, and that alone is sufficient for me.
“Having the courage to take responsibility at such a young age, fully aware of the match’s significance, is what counts. Penalties can be missed, and he will experience more misses throughout his career, but what matters is that he had the bravery to step up.”
Currently, Inter sit at the top of the table, six points clear of AC Milan, who are facing third-placed Napoli on Monday.
