Brisbane Roar’s head coach, Ruben Zadkovich, is confident that teenage defender Lucas Herrington is poised to command a significant transfer fee as part of the club’s strategy aimed at nurturing young talent and selling players to international clubs.
Before Herrington had even made his debut in the Isuzu UTE A-League, Zadkovich hailed him as the “best defender in Australian football” during the pre-season.
This bold claim raised some eyebrows at the time, but the Roar coach has once again reaffirmed his high regard for the young defender.

Despite his team securing only six points this season, Zadkovich is optimistic about Brisbane’s prospects, identifying Herrington as one of several promising players likely to fetch substantial transfer fees for the club in the near future.
“We anticipated a tough season, and while we find ourselves not quite where we’d like to be points-wise, ideally higher than the bottom, we expected a mid-table finish that hasn’t materialised,” Zadkovich explained.
“However, amid this transition phase and the challenges facing the club, we have the chance to integrate these young talents into the squad, giving them valuable experience in tough conditions.”
“Seeing Lucas (Herrington) represent the 20s (Young Socceroos) is encouraging. His professionalism is blossoming, which is crucial for this club. I genuinely believe the transfer fee on his head will be substantial. As I mentioned earlier this season, I haven’t encountered a talent like him before.”

Currently, Herrington is in China with the Young Socceroos, competing in the AFC U20 Asian Cup, where Australia has advanced to the knockout stages with three wins from three group matches.
He’s not the only young Roar player on international duty, as Quinn Macnicol, Charlie Parkin, and Rhys Williams have all been selected for the Joeys squad at the Hattrick U17 International Tournament in the United Arab Emirates.
“We’ve got three young lads with the Joeys: Quinny, who is proving to be an exceptional player as he matures. He’s stepping up as a leader alongside Charlie and Rhys. All three are promising young athletes,” Zadkovich noted.
“I’m also optimistic about the development opportunities for young talents like Jacob Brazete, Nathan Amanatidis, and Sam Klein – another Queenslander – among others.”
“The more of these young players we can integrate during this transition, the quicker we can develop them into sellable assets for the club. This will be an essential strategy for our future direction, focusing on creating as many sellable talents as possible.”
Earlier this year, Brisbane sold young striker Thomas Waddingham to English Championship club Portsmouth for an undisclosed fee. Zadkovich believes this model can be reproduced moving forward as the club remains committed to developing young talent.
“The sale of Tommy Waddingham is a shining example. Just a year ago, he was playing in the NPL, and now he’s playing in the Championship for Portsmouth. Such transitions don’t occur without considerable effort and dedication from everyone involved, especially the players.”
“We have a wealth of talented young players with excellent attitudes. One of the highlights of my current role is coaching these youngsters through this phase and witnessing their growth. This exposure has been the biggest upside of the season thus far, to be honest.”
