Bayer Leverkusen’s Bundesliga title defence took another hit as they were forced to settle for a 0-0 stalemate against Wolfsburg at the Volkswagen Arena. This match marked the sixth time in their last seven encounters at home that Die Wölfe have failed to find the back of the net.
Leverkusen found themselves in a battle just days earlier, going through a demanding 120-minute DFB-Pokal quarter-final against Cologne. Despite making several changes to the starting XI, Xabi Alonso’s side appeared fatigued, particularly in the opening stages of the match.
The sluggish start almost cost them, as Konstantinos Koulierakis headed the ball into the net within the first seven minutes, capitalising on a well-delivered free-kick. However, his celebration was cut short following a VAR review that ruled him offside, denying his first Bundesliga goal.
Before half-time, genuine scoring opportunities were few and far between, with Leverkusen’s only significant chance falling to Nordi Mukiele, who somehow managed to head over from just metres out with the goal at his mercy.
Granit Xhaka also sent a shot over the bar before the break, as frustration mounted in the home dugout. Wolfsburg enjoyed a significant share of possession, but they failed to truly challenge goalkeeper Lukas Hradecky.
Things changed after the interval, with Leverkusen gaining more control over the game. Still, their struggle to find the finishing touch led Alonso to introduce Florian Wirtz and Jeremie Frimpong, who had scored against Wolfsburg in their previous two seasons.
However, the substitutions didn’t yield the desired results. Instead, it was Wolfsburg who came closest to scoring with Killian Fischer’s long-range effort clattering against the crossbar.
In the end, neither team managed to secure a goal in what was an unexciting match that reflected the lack of attacking quality. Wolfsburg managed to climb into the top half of the table but extended their winless streak to four games in the Bundesliga.
This result marked their first scoreless home game in 21 league matches, while Leverkusen’s struggles continued, resulting in just two clean sheets from their last 10 Bundesliga away fixtures. They now find themselves eight points behind Bayern Munich ahead of an important clash next week.
