Mateo Retegui was the star of the show, netting four goals – including a hat-trick in the first half – as Atalanta thrashed Hellas Verona 5-0 at the Stadio Marcantonio Bentegodi. This emphatic win marked a much-needed return to form for La Dea, who had managed only one victory in their previous six league outings.
Entering the match with hopes of remaining competitive in the Serie A title chase, Atalanta began positively, asserting their dominance early on.
It wasn’t long before the visitors took control, scoring in the 21st minute. Charles De Ketelaere’s shot aimed at the far post rebounded off the upright, allowing Atalanta’s main man, Retegui, to pounce and slot the loose ball into the bottom-left corner.
Retegui continued to shine, doubling his tally just four minutes later. After receiving a pass from Berat Djimsiti, he showcased his agility and precision by crafting space before finishing confidently into the bottom-right corner with a powerful left-footed strike.
Verona’s misery deepened eight minutes prior to half-time, as Ederson surged forward from midfield to find the bottom-right corner with a well-placed shot from inside the box.
Just before the half-time break, Retegui completed his first-half hat-trick, firing a shot straight down the middle of the goal from the right side of the penalty area.

The second half began quietly, contrasting the excitement of the first, but Retegui reignited the match in the 57th minute with his fourth goal.
A delightful series of passes eventually allowed Marten De Roon to find himself in the box, where he squared the ball back to Retegui, who expertly flicked a finish into the far bottom-right corner.
Verona nearly found a late consolation goal with just 15 minutes remaining, but a brilliant reflex save from Rui Patricio denied Jackson Tchatchoua’s effort aimed at the bottom-left corner.
From that point on, Atalanta comfortably controlled the game, securing a crucial three points that keep them within four points of league leaders Napoli, who are slated to face Udinese in the evening.
Meanwhile, Hellas Verona find themselves precariously positioned, sitting just three points above the relegation zone, with five of the six teams below them yet to play this weekend.
