Cafu, Brazil’s two-time World Cup champion, expressed on Monday that he believes this year’s tournament is the ideal opportunity for the five-time winners to reclaim the title after a 24-year gap.
Cafu captained Brazil to their fifth World Cup victory, leading the team to a 2-0 win over Germany in the 2002 final held in Yokohama.
He was also part of the squad that triumphed over Italy via penalties to secure their 1994 title in Pasadena.
“With 24 years since our last title, I genuinely feel this is the right moment for Brazil,” Cafu stated to reporters in Madrid while attending the Laureus Awards.
“We’ve welcomed a coach who knows how to win, Carlo Ancelotti, who will undoubtedly enhance the Brazilian national team’s legacy.”
Cafu, a former right-back, indicated that Brazil possesses significant strength in both midfield and attack, prompting Ancelotti to concentrate on bolstering the defence ahead of this year’s tournament, which will take place in the US, Mexico, and Canada.
“If Brazil can keep a clean sheet during the World Cup, they’re practically guaranteed to score at least once in every match,” Cafu noted.
He expressed hope that Real Madrid’s Vinicius Junior, who has often found himself in the spotlight for various controversies, would excel during the tournament, stating: “The World Cup is the ultimate stage to move past any kind of scandal.”
“If they make it to the final, Vinícius Junior has the opportunity to showcase his true talent and what he can achieve on the football field.”
Vinícius contributed to Brazil’s 3-1 win over Croatia in Orlando on April 1st with an assist, helping to silence critics following a loss to France in a previous friendly.
Meanwhile, 19-year-old Endrick also impressed during the match against Croatia.
“I believe this is a great moment for him,” Cafu remarked, also praising Real Madrid’s decision to loan the young forward to Lyon last year as beneficial for his development.
“It was very advantageous for him. It allowed him to develop, gain experience, and establish himself as a key player. At Real Madrid, with so many stars, it’s challenging for a young player to become pivotal.”
“He’s a young talent who can bring a lot to the Brazilian squad, and I’m confident Ancelotti has a positive outlook on him,” Cafu concluded.
