Stuttgart dealt another blow to Borussia Dortmund’s dwindling hopes of European qualification, handing Der BVB their fifth successive defeat in their head-to-head encounters, marking the first time this has happened in Bundesliga history, with a 2-1 victory at Signal Iduna Park.
The initial moments of Niko Kovac’s debut match in charge of Dortmund unfolded at a breakneck speed. Ramy Bensebaini squandered two opportunities to give the hosts an early lead, while the visitors had a goal disallowed for offside after Jeff Chabot headed in Angelo Stiller’s free-kick.
Jamie Gittens was a constant threat on the left flank, and his powerful long-range effort forced Alexander Nubel into an impressive save at his near post. Deniz Undav missed a golden opportunity to capitalise on a poor backpass from former Stuttgart captain Waldemar Anton, racing in one-on-one with Gregor Kobel, but Emre Can’s timely intervention broke down the attack.
At the other end, Nubel was once again called into action to deny Karim Adeyemi’s audacious back-heeled attempt following Julian Ryerson’s cross, rounding off an engaging first half.
Adeyemi continued to look dangerous on the right, narrowly missing the target at the start of the second half, but it was Sebastian Hoeneß’ side that struck first under fortunate circumstances.
Jamie Leweling set up Chris Fuhrich on the right, and Anton inadvertently directed Fuhrich’s cross past Kobel, presenting a significant gift to his former team.
Chabot then extended Die Roten’s advantage just after the hour mark with a precise left-footed finish from Leweling’s perfectly placed delivery, marking his first Bundesliga goal.
Gittens seemed the most likely candidate to spark a comeback for the home side, having his deflected shot brilliantly tipped onto the crossbar by Nubel. Despite Dortmund enjoying lengthy spells of possession, they found it difficult to breach Stuttgart’s determined defensive setup.

That was until Julian Brandt found the net to narrow the deficit after a quick one-two with Pascal Gross from a short corner, raising hopes for a thrilling finish.
However, those aspirations were dashed when Ryerson received a second yellow card for dissent in the dying moments. Dortmund trudged off without a point, marking their eighth league loss of the season, and extending their streak to 13 matches without a clean sheet.
With this defeat, they sit in a disappointing 11th place, while Stuttgart rose temporarily to fourth, ahead of RB Leipzig’s clash with St. Pauli on Sunday.
