Wellington Phoenix vs Melbourne Victory – Shark Highlights | Isuzu UTE A-League 2024-25 | Round 26
Melbourne Victory climbed to fourth place in the Isuzu UTE A-League standings following a stunning solo goal from Nikos Vergos that ensured a dramatic 3-2 victory over Wellington Phoenix at Sky Stadium on Saturday evening.
Starting the day in fifth position, Victory moved ahead of the Western Sydney Wanderers, securing their place in the top four with this latest win—marking their third triumph in four outings.
Subway Socceroo Nishan Velupillay got the scoring underway just four minutes into the match, but Phoenix’s young talent Corban Piper quickly levelled the score in an exciting opening 10 minutes at the ‘Cake Tin’.
Victory regained the lead just before half-time, courtesy of a goal from Zinedine Machach. This set the stage for Vergos to create some distance between the two teams with an impressive strike off the post following a determined run that began from his own half.
Paulo Retre set up a thrilling finish in Wellington, curling a shot into the top-left corner from outside the penalty area to reduce the deficit. However, despite their efforts, the Phoenix couldn’t find that crucial equaliser, allowing Victory to secure all three points from across the ditch.
These teams faced off in last season’s Semi-Finals, but while Victory pushed on towards a top-four finish, this defeat left Wellington languishing in 11th place with 24 points—nine points shy of sixth-placed Sydney FC with three matches remaining.

Victory was quick off the mark, scoring just four minutes in as the in-form Nishan Velupillay delivered a composed finish into the bottom-right corner, capitalising on an inventive reverse pass from fellow Socceroo Daniel Arzani. Velupillay shielded the ball from his defender and sent a low shot past Josh Oluwayemi into the net.

However, the Phoenix struck back at the 10-minute mark, with Corban Piper netting his third goal of the season. Wellington executed a swift counter-attack, transitioning the ball across the pitch until it reached Sam Sutton. His low cross found Piper sliding into the six-yard box to equalise.
As the first half drew to a close, it seemed Wellington might retain a level scoreline. Yet, in stoppage time, Velupillay’s well-weighted corner was met by the head of Zinedine Machach, who nudged Victory back in front just before the break.
Victory came out with renewed energy after the interval, displaying their own counter-attacking style early in the second half. This time, it was the individual brilliance of Nikos Vergos that shone through as he charged through midfield to the edge of the box, unleashing a left-footed shot that struck the post and found the back of the net.
With the score at 3-1 and facing a potential fifth defeat in eight matches, the Phoenix sought to spark a comeback. Substitute Paulo Retre provided a moment of quality with a stunning first-time shot that curled into the top-left corner. Tim Payne set up the opportunity with a powerful run down the right wing, finding Retre at the edge of the box. Retre took the shot on his first touch, leaving Mitch Langerak with no chance as Wellington narrowed the gap to 3-2 with just 15 minutes left on the clock.
Now back within striking distance, Wellington pressed hard for an equaliser, but unable to net that elusive goal, Victory ultimately walked away with a well-deserved victory in an enthralling five-goal clash.
