Sydney FC have finalised the signing of defender Alexandar Popovic from K League 1 outfit Gwangju FC for an undisclosed fee.
The 22-year-old has penned a three-and-a-half-year contract with the Sky Blues in the Isuzu UTE A-League, having initially joined on loan until late January.
Following his impressive performances, Sydney decided to make Popovic’s move permanent by triggering the buy clause in his loan agreement.
Having appeared 16 times this season across all competitions, Popovic has quickly established himself in the core of Sydney FC’s defence and is now committed to the club until the conclusion of the 2027-28 Isuzu UTE A-League season.

“I am thrilled to secure my long-term future with Sydney FC,” Popovic stated after signing his new contract.
“This is a remarkable club with an impressive history, and I have felt completely at home from day one.”
He added: “The coaching team, my fellow players, and the Members and supporters have been fantastic, and I’m eager to repay their confidence in me.

“I also aim to continue my growth as a player and enhance my international opportunities.”
After progressing through the youth ranks at Adelaide United, Popovic made his way to South Korea in 2024, where he made 10 appearances in K League 1 for Gwangju before joining Sydney FC.
“Alexandar has been exceptional since he joined us,” said Sydney FC head coach Ufuk Talay.
“He has demonstrated maturity, composure, and a high level of technical skill, making him integral to our defensive setup moving forward.”
He noted: “There is plenty of room for improvement, and he possesses all the qualities to achieve great success in his career.”

Popovic missed Sydney FC’s 4-1 triumph over Adelaide United in Round 17 due to a minor groin issue, but the club is optimistic about his availability for this weekend’s Sydney Derby.
The announcement of Popovic’s permanent signing follows Sydney FC’s recent acquisition of fellow centre-back Alex Grant.
Grant, who has signed until the end of the season, makes his return to the Isuzu UTE A-League after stints in Korea and China, adding crucial depth to the Sky Blues’ defence following Hayden Matthews’ transfer to English Championship side Portsmouth.
