Pep Guardiola is optimistic that his Manchester City squad can make amends for one of their significant defeats this season as they aim to create FA Cup history with a match against Bournemouth this Sunday.
A win over the Cherries would see City advance to the semi-finals of the knockout tournament for an unprecedented seventh consecutive year.
However, their previous encounter with the south coast team resulted in City’s first Premier League loss of the season, a 2-1 defeat back in November, following a remarkable streak of four successive English top-flight titles.
This loss marked the beginning of a concerning downturn for City, who managed to win only one of their next 11 matches while suffering seven defeats. Guardiola acknowledges the significant ramifications of the Bournemouth defeat.
“That was the first match where we fell short of the standards necessary to be competitive,” he remarked. “I couldn’t remedy the issues that game initiated, particularly in terms of pressing, aggression, and duels.
“We have excelled in these areas, but in that match, we were lacking the bare minimum. I’ve been working on it for many months since. We possess the technology, but often, it takes time.”
Currently, City sit in fifth place in the Premier League, a whopping 22 points adrift of leaders Liverpool, and have been eliminated from this season’s Champions League by Real Madrid.
The FA Cup now stands as their final opportunity for silverware this season, with Guardiola having secured the trophy twice during his tenure at the Etihad.
“Last season we achieved a record – reaching the semi-finals six times in a row, and most of the time we were competing under challenging conditions after Champions League matches,” Guardiola reflected.
“It was tough to manage, so reaching that stage highlights how vital this competition is.“
The Spaniard added, “Given the trials we’ve faced this season, returning to Wembley for the semi-final and advancing to the final would be quite special.“
City’s goalkeeper Ederson is expected to be available for selection after sitting out their most recent fixture against Brighton due to an abdominal injury.
