Nottingham Forest fought back to secure a 1-1 draw against Aston Villa, thereby stretching the Villans’ winless streak to four encounters at the City Ground since the Tricky Trees made their return to the Premier League.
The visitors faced a setback before the match kicked off when Emiliano Martinez was forced to withdraw, leaving Marco Bizot to start in goal. Bizot was quick to get into action, making the first save of the encounter by parrying a shot from Neco Williams wide of the post.
Given the significance of the match at both ends of the table, tensions were high, and the first goal arrived via an unfortunate own goal in the 23rd minute.
Morgan Rogers sent a precise ball into the six-yard box, but Murillo struggled to get his footing and inadvertently turned it into his own net.
Rogers seemed energised by his contribution to the opener as he then played a pass that required Matz Sels to sprint off his line to block Ollie Watkins’ effort, which soon followed with a powerful shot that rattled the crossbar.
However, Forest answered back in the 38th minute when Callum Hudson-Odoi set up Williams, who made no mistake with a first-time strike into the back of the net past Bizot.
Williams then tried his luck again from distance, but Bizot was equal to the challenge, while another header went just wide of the Dutch goalkeeper’s post right before halftime.
Igor Jesus had two attempts go off target shortly after the break, and Youri Tielemans also missed his chance as both teams pressed for a decisive goal.
After an hour of play, both keepers were forced to pull off impressive saves, with Bizot thwarting Morgan Gibbs-White’s effort that had taken a deflection off Matty Cash, and Sels denying Watkins just moments later.
Sels also dealt with a shot from Ross Barkley but could only parry it into a threatening area, allowing Rogers a chance, yet he sent his effort well over the bar. When Williams delivered a corner that found Chris Wood, he couldn’t direct it on target, but the full-backfollowed up with a fierce shot that Tielemans managed to block.
As the match drew to a close, Villa created late chances to clinch the win; however, Watkins blasted over the bar, and Cash’s ambitious attempt was comfortably saved.
This draw extends Nottingham Forest’s unbeaten streak across all competitions to five matches, although they remain precariously perched just three points clear of the relegation zone, with Tottenham Hotspur lurking just behind them.
Aston Villa, meanwhile, saw their three-match winning streak come to a halt, leaving them without the chance to leapfrog Manchester United in the standings.
