Melbourne Storm players could find themselves demoted to reserve grade if their performance does not significantly improve soon, according to coach Craig Bellamy. This warning came on the heels of Melbourne’s dismal 50-10 defeat against the Penrith Panthers.
In an unexpected twist, the Storm managed to complete 94 per cent of their sets, yet they suffered their third consecutive loss and conceded a record number of points for the first time since 2003.
This marked their heaviest defeat since the 2008 grand final, with Thomas Jenkins netting his fifth double of the season for Penrith.
Addressing the media after the match, Bellamy hinted at the possibility of making significant changes if the current trend continues.
“We simply need to push a bit harder,” Bellamy remarked.
“If some players aren’t willing to give that extra effort, they can head down to reserve grade while we bring up some younger players. That’s our approach for situations like this.”
“We need to learn from tonight’s performance and improve. The key disappointment for me was our defence.”

“Being a good defender doesn’t require a genius; it just takes hard work and determination.”
“We knew we were up against a good team, one that’s currently ahead of the rest in the competition.”

“Penrith haven’t had many points conceded against them and tend to score a lot themselves, but I was truly disappointed with our defensive efforts this evening.”
“To allow such a high score and to concede points in the manner we did was really frustrating for me, yet I hope we can learn from this experience and move forward.”
Bellamy acknowledged the need for his team to improve their point of contact in defence.
“I doubt they have many weaknesses to exploit, but we need to focus on not just completing our sets but also improving our contact,” he said.
“We did manage to complete our sets, which was a partial success, but our contact was poor at best, and that’s something that needs to be addressed.”
Captain Harry Grant noted that the team showed flashes of promise with the ball but lacked consistency in defence.
“That’s an area where we need to lift our game,” Grant stated.
“We get ourselves in good positions to score but sometimes perhaps become too eager, and then we let them down the other end to score tries. That’s simply not acceptable. We need to rectify that. No matter who our opponents are, if we perform like that, it’s going to make for a tough night.
“We must take a good long look in the mirror and focus on our own performance before turning our attention to the opposition.”
