Melbourne’s struggles following last year’s grand final defeat have reached a new low, as the formidable club suffered a crushing 38-14 defeat at home to the Warriors.
The shock of conceding 50 points to the Panthers was significant, but the performance against New Zealand is likely to leave Craig Bellamy deeply concerned.
The legendary coach’s frustration boiled over at half-time when he had a heated exchange with second-rower Joe Chan, whose side was trailing 18-14.
“I’ve sat in that chair before, so my advice to Joe is: never talk back to Craig, it didn’t end well for me the last time I did,” remarked Cooper Cronk on Fox League.

Chan was responsible for several mistakes, including a ruck infringement and a penalty in the first half.
Lock Trent Loiero also displayed poor discipline, earning a report for a high tackle prior to the break.
“I imagine both Trent Loiero and Joe Chan will be in for a stern chat from Craig Bellamy … their lack of discipline has really put their team under pressure tonight,” Mick Ennis commented.
The motivation talk failed to have an impact as Chan made another error early in the second half, resulting in him being substituted in the 45th minute, never to return.
“It’s tough, he’s had a rough night, we’ve all had them. He’s a good player, Chan,” Ennis noted.

In the second half, the Storm failed to score a single point, allowing the Warriors to secure a commanding 38-14 victory — their first win at AAMI Park in 11 years and the largest margin the club has recorded against Melbourne.
Melbourne’s frustrations were on display with 13 minutes remaining when Chanel Harris-Tavita executed a massive shot on prop Josh King. After King dropped the ball, he received an earful from his half-back. King responded by shoving him and returning to defend.

A confrontation ensued, with Stefano Utoikamanu noticeably squaring off against Jacob Laban.
“This is a result of Melbourne’s frustration,” Ennis commented.
“Harris-Tavita is exceptional; he doesn’t get enough credit for his defence, and he certainly let Josh King know about it.”
The referee called both captains, Harry Grant and James Fisher-Harris, to address Jahrome Hughes, who was placed on report for a high tackle following King’s knock-on.
No players were sent to the sin bin during the altercation.
On the final tackle of the next set, Will Warbrick was brought down close to the corner by Roger Tuivasa-Sheck, preventing a potential try.
“Their defence is tenacious, brutal, and relentless,” exclaimed commentator Andrew Voss, as players flocked to celebrate with the Warriors post.
Tuivasa-Sheck savoured the moment, holding a finger aloft to remind the Melbourne players of the recent events.

After the match, Bellamy remained seated in the coaching box long after the game had ended, gazing into space.
“This is a direct result of losing two grand finals consecutively; it’s a significant factor in what’s going wrong at the Melbourne Storm,” Cronk observed.
