Nico Gonzalez netted the decisive goal as the seven-time champions Manchester City rallied from behind to defeat Southampton 2-1 in the FA Cup semi-final, handing the Saints their first loss since late January (W16, D4).
Southampton made their way to Wembley for the first time since the 2023/24 Championship playoff final, having already taken down Premier League sides Fulham and the then-leaders Arsenal.
Standing in their path were the current league leaders, who were making their eighth consecutive appearance in the semi-finals, and they opted for eight changes from their previous match.
However, this did not disrupt City’s early momentum, as they tried to exploit gaps in the defence, only to be thwarted by the narrowest of offside calls against Omar Marmoush on two occasions.
The assistant referee was again in the spotlight during a frenetic first quarter of an hour, this time raising the flag when Leo Scienza thought he had scored the opening goal at the opposite end.
In a fiercely contested first half, Southampton held their own, but City dominated possession and created the better chances, with Marmoush coming close with a near-post attempt that was expertly saved by Daniel Peretz.
This shot turned out to be the only on-target effort from either team before the break, with Southampton unable to muster a single attempt before half-time.
Having maintained their impressive record of not conceding in the first half of the FA Cup this season, Southampton would have been satisfied with the deadlock at half-time, which almost served as a springboard for them to take the lead, were it not for a perfectly-timed recovery challenge from Nathan Ake that denied Tom Fellows.
This, however, was not indicative of the pattern that was to follow. Pep Guardiola responded with a double substitution before the hour mark, ramping up the pressure on the Saints.
Despite their steadfast defence, Southampton soon brought on reinforcements in the forms of Erling Haaland and Nico O’Reilly. They were left hanging on when Peretz denied Gonzalez, and Tijjani Reijnders volleyed just wide.
In an astonishing twist, it was the Southampton fans who erupted in joy 11 minutes from the end when Finn Azaz turned to connect with the ball and unleashed an unstoppable shot that sailed past James Trafford with his second touch.
Unfortunately for the Saints faithful, that lead was short-lived; just four minutes later, Jeremy Doku unleashed a strike that took a crucial deflection off James Bree, sending the ball beyond Peretz.
Moments later, Gonzalez found himself in a pocket of space, curling in a long-range effort that flipped the tie entirely with little time left on the clock.
Southampton piled forward in search of an equaliser, successfully clearing a counter-attack to deny Savinho, but they were unable to respond, ultimately seeing Manchester City advance to the final at their expense.
As a second-tier team, Southampton’s sole FA Cup triumph came in the 1975/76 season, but they will not have the chance to replicate that success as their focus shifts to the race for Championship promotion.
Meanwhile, Guardiola’s side continues to dream of another domestic treble, with a final matchup against either Chelsea or Leeds United on the horizon.
