A stunning solo effort from Mika Godts stole the spotlight in Ajax’s 2-0 triumph away at NAC Breda on Saturday night.
Desperate for a win, relegation-threatened NAC Breda had gone through their last 19 league matches, managing to record only two victories. On the other hand, Ajax was equally eager for points, trailing four points behind Feyenoord in the race for second place, which ensures direct entry into next year’s UEFA Champions League.
Both sides had early attempts at breaking the deadlock with Wout Weghorst, NAC’s Charles-Andreas Brym, and Max Balard all failing to find the back of the net in the first quarter-hour of play.
Ajax finally made the breakthrough after 20 minutes when Steven Berghuis sent a deep ball to Mika Godts. The Belgian made a dazzling run into the box and squared it to Oscar Gloukh, who calmly slotted it in the left corner, marking his first Eredivisie goal since early January.
Just before half-time, a moment of pure brilliance doubled Ajax’s lead. Godts picked up the ball near the halfway line and took off on a thrilling run into NAC’s territory. The Belgian winger navigated past Clint Leemans, Raul Paula, Fredrik Oldrup Jensen, and back to Leemans again inside the box, before beating Bielica with a clever finish, capping off an exquisite solo effort with a simple tap-in.
After the break, Paula and Mohamed Nassoh tested Indonesian goalkeeper Maarten Paes, but he responded brilliantly with two superb saves to keep NAC at bay.
Paes proved his worth again when Kamal Sowah unleashed a strike towards his goal, which the keeper expertly deflected out for a corner. On the other end, Polish goalkeeper Daniel Bielica showcased his skills as well, denying Godts a second with a timely save in the 78th minute.
The second half was fairly uneventful, with Ajax struggling to create much as they spent a significant portion of the half in their own territory. The most significant moment came in the 87th minute when Ghanaian star André Ayew narrowly missed a cross that just skimmed past Paes’ goal.
Ajax effectively maintained their composure in defence, and in the dying moments, Rayane Bounida struck the post, ensuring the score line stayed at 2-0. Interim manager Óscar García celebrated a crucial second victory in a month and a half, keeping their hopes alive for a second-place finish.
