Declan Rice, the Arsenal midfielder, encapsulated the spirit of resilience following his team’s tense 1-0 win over Newcastle United, which lifted them back to the summit of the Premier League on Saturday.
“After our defeat last week against Manchester City, we acknowledged that we need to secure victories in five matches to clinch the Premier League title,” he stated.
“That’s one down, and four more to go. The aim is to win, no matter how we do it.”
Arsenal’s form has faltered, with their once nine-point lead in the title race having disappeared. Their 2-1 defeat to Manchester City last Sunday, alongside City’s recent narrow win over Burnley, saw them lose their spot at the top for the first time since October.
Saturday’s challenge, featuring a brilliant goal by Eberechi Eze in the ninth minute, was tough but essential, allowing Arsenal to once again edge three points clear, despite City holding a game in hand.
With both Arsenal and City having nearly identical goal differences, the title race has evolved into a five-match sprint. Mikel Arteta’s team must now concentrate on their upcoming league fixtures against Fulham and Burnley at home, as well as away games against West Ham United and Crystal Palace – fixtures that, on paper, should be manageable.
Winning all these matches could put them in a strong position to secure their first league title since 2004.
“These are thrilling times. There’s a lot at stake,” Rice added, as he prepares to lead the midfield in the Champions League semi-final first leg against Atletico Madrid on Wednesday.
Exhausted by 97 minutes of hard-fought play, Arsenal’s players felt the toll at the final whistle. However, captain Martin Odegaard assured fans there would be no easing off in their quest to hold off City.

“The fixtures are intense. We must keep pushing. It’s the tail end of the season; we need to give it our all, fighting in every single match,” the Norwegian stated.
“That’s where we aspire to be, but it’s bound to go down to the wire.”
“We are prepared for this challenge, and we’ll fight every day.”
