Lukas Lerager, a former player for FC Copenhagen, has expressed concerns that the current squad is lacking in width following a tumultuous season that has seen them battling to stave off relegation from the Danish Superliga.
The experienced midfielder is now plying his trade with Widzew Lodz in the Polish Ekstraklasa after not coming to terms with the reigning Danish champions on a contract extension.
Lerager made a total of 219 appearances for FC Copenhagen before making the move to Widzew Lodz this winter.
Since his departure, the 32-year-old has been keeping a close eye on his former club, which is currently in the relegation playoffs for the first time in their history.
In Lerager’s view, this struggle is predominantly due to a squad that has not been assembled correctly.
“FC Copenhagen’s troubles stem from their squad lacking the necessary width. Competing in three tournaments has taken its toll on the team, and we are now witnessing the repercussions,” Lerager stated in an interview with Polish media outlet Pilka Nozna.
“I’ve experienced playing matches every three days myself, and the biggest hurdle then is the mental recovery. While the body might bounce back in a short timeframe, the mind can still feel fatigued.”
“Some players might struggle to maintain their focus and prepare for the next league game after just participating in European tournaments. The composition of FC Copenhagen’s squad hasn’t been optimally arranged, and that’s impacting their results,” Lerager added.
