Lukas Lerager, a former player for FC Copenhagen, claims the current team is suffering from a lack of width following a tumultuous season that has seen them struggle against relegation in the Danish Superliga.
The talented midfielder is currently showcasing his skills at Widzew Lodz in the Polish Ekstraklasa, having parted ways with FC Copenhagen after contract extension talks with the Danish champions fell through.
During his tenure at FC Copenhagen, Lerager made 219 appearances before making the move to Widzew Lodz this winter.
Since then, the 32-year-old has kept a close eye on his former club, which is now embroiled in relegation playoffs for the first time in their history.
Lerager believes this predicament stems primarily from a squad lacking proper composition.
“FC Copenhagen’s challenges are rooted in the absence of the necessary width in the squad. Competing in three tournaments has taken its toll, and we are now witnessing the repercussions,” he remarked to Polish outlet Pilka Nozna.
“I’ve experienced the grind of playing every three days, and the greatest hurdle is mental recovery. While the body might cope with such quick turnarounds, the mind can still feel fatigued.”
“Maintaining full concentration can be tough for some players, especially after participating in European competitions. The way FC Copenhagen’s squad is structured has not been optimal, and this has had a direct impact on their performances,” Lerager added.
