FIFA has initiated disciplinary proceedings against the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) due to Islamophobic and xenophobic chants that occurred during a friendly match between Spain and Egypt on 31 March, the international football governing body announced on Tuesday.
During the match at the RCDE Stadium in Barcelona, home to LaLiga’s Espanyol, Spain’s supporters were heard chanting “who doesn’t jump is a Muslim” in what was a World Cup warm-up clash that finished in a goalless stalemate.
“FIFA has commenced disciplinary proceedings today against the Spanish Football Association for the events during the friendly match against Egypt,” the organisation stated in an official announcement.
Last week, Spanish police began investigating the matter related to the chants.
Spanish winger Lamine Yamal took to Instagram to express his disapproval, labelling the chants as disrespectful and intolerable.
The Egyptian Football Association also denounced the chants, describing them as an entirely unacceptable “repugnant act of racism,” emphasising that the behaviour of a small group of fans would not tarnish the strong relationship between the Spanish and Egyptian football federations.
