Emile Heskey discussed his journey to discovering his perfect role on the field. “To be honest, I never really considered which position I would play. My main goal was simply to get the ball, take it for a run, and score goals. I have always enjoyed dribbling towards goal and finding the back of the net. I initially started my career as a defender, but my tendency to seize the ball and surge forward ultimately led to a move up front. I would describe myself as dependable—my teammates could count on me to perform my role. I kept things straightforward: I had an opponent in front of me, and it was my duty to get past him,” reflected the former England star.
He also reminisced about his transfer to Liverpool. “Liverpool had been keeping an eye on me since I was eighteen, but I didn’t make the switch until I was twenty-two. By that time, I was already part of the national squad and was familiar with some of the players, which made the transition smoother. However, nothing in football comes easy—you always need to push yourself and have faith in your contributions to the team. As a young boy, I was a Liverpool supporter and always dreamed of playing for them. John Barnes was my idol. I’d watch him during major tournaments and aspired to emulate him. So, when I finally donned that iconic red jersey, it was a dream fulfilled.”
