Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has stated that the Red Devils must strive to reclaim their position at the summit of the Premier League following a penalty shootout defeat to Fulham in the FA Cup.
The loss to the Cottagers has further compounded a dismal start to Amorim’s tenure, with United languishing in 14th place in the Premier League, a staggering 34 points adrift of league leaders Liverpool.
Nevertheless, the Portuguese tactician emphasised that his primary objective at Old Trafford is to secure the club’s first Premier League title since 2013, rather than focusing on cup success.
“Our aim is to win the Premier League, and while I acknowledge we’re losing games and missing out on trophies this season, our focus remains on clinching the Premier League once again,” stated Amorim.
“I can’t predict how long this will take, but that is our target. If we maintain this mindset, we can endure the pain of defeats, sometimes significantly, but we must keep pressing towards our goal regardless.”
Currently, the notion of United regaining their status as the dominant force in English football seems distant.
Amorim has managed to secure victory in only five of his 16 league matches in charge.
“It’s impossible to determine (how long it will take),” he reflected.
“However, we are beginning to gain insight. I believe the players are improving, we’re getting a better grasp of the league, and we have a clearer understanding of how to manage the squad moving forward. Time will tell.”
United’s immediate focus shifts to the Europa League, which now represents their sole opportunity for silverware this season.
Amorim’s squad faces a challenging last-16 matchup against Real Sociedad, and their prospects were further complicated by being pushed to 120 minutes in the previous round.
“It’s crucial, but we need to ensure the players recover and support those who are fatigued,” said Amorim.
